The News Quiz Recording (sort of) – Series 84 Episode 7

So a new episode of the News Quiz was being recorded last week and, despite not having tickets to sit in the studio audience of the show, I went along anyway, to wait outside to meet the cast. #funlife

???????????????????????????????The News Quiz is a radio panel show in which panellists look over the weeks news and laugh about it. It is chaired by Sandi Toksvig (pictured) and features Jeremy Hardy as a regular panellist. The episode I waited outside of also feature David Mitchell, Andy Hamilton and Rebecca Front.

???????????????????????????????So in the end I met the cast (save Rebecca Front who I mistook for someone who just looks like Rebecca Front) and walked away with a healthy haul of autographs. Sandi Toksvig was especially nice.

David Mitchell. He’s a man of many talents, namely Radio Comedy, Panel Shows and QI. I watched him perform a couple of months ago at a recording of ‘That Mitchell and Webb Sound’ Series 5 and yesterday I got the pleasure of hearing his voice again, this time recording a new sitcom pilot for Radio 4.

The recording took place at BBC Radio Theater, a venue that not only boasts nice chairs, nice lighting and headache-enduring jazz music but I saw Reece Buttery coming out of it! Fun times!

Blocked RecordingSo the pilot focuses on Felix (played by Mitchell), a once famous novelist but now the grumpy manager of a small theatre. I must admit I initially found this set-up odd however the episode managed to put the characters into the some great situations and by the end of the show I couldn’t think of a better setting.

Mitchell is joined by co-stars Lorna Watson (Watson & Oliver) as Felix’s long-suffering wife Nettie, Poppy Rush (Inside No. 9) as their daughter and Chris Ramsey (Hebburn) as her boyfriend.

Me and David MitchellThe main storyline of the episode was that the theatre was hosting a children’s play and the staff all need to CRB checked. I can’t give away much of the plotline however it includes a missing child, a pregnant dog, a dead CRB inspector and a mysterious insight into one of the character’s pasts.

Me and Chris RamseyAfter the show I (obviously) went to meet the cast, all of whom were lovely. Chris Ramsey from Hebburn, which I’ve never watched but I’m sure some people have, was very nice indeed and gave me two autographs and a photo! I even got Poppy Rush to sign a poster for her episode of Inside No. so that was nice.

In conclusion (what is this, an english essay?) I thought the pilot was superb and I’ll be very surprised if the show isn’t commissioned for a full series.

That Mitchell and Webb Sound Recording – Series 5 Episode 4

Is it worrying to not know who Little Mix are? I know it’s quite unusual but I wouldn’t say that ‘worrying’ is the appropriate adjective. Well anyway, I was up at the BBC the other night, to go and see David Mitchell and Robert Webb record the fifth series of their Radio Sketch Show – That Mitchell and Webb Sound. And by complete coincidence, Little Mix were performing round the corner at Radio 1. So I joined the crowd of anxious teenage girls and met two of Little Mix, don’t ask me which ones. They turned out to be far from the boyband I expected.

That Mitchell and Webb SoundSo on to the topic of this article; That Mitchell and Webb Sound. It’s a sketch show written by and starring the comedy duo; Mitchell and Webb along with their frequent collaborators Olivia Coleman and James Bachman. The show has spawned four series, the last of which was broadcast in 2009 and with such a long absence, many fans were worried that the sketch show would never return until earlier this year when it was announced the show would be returning once again. However to fan’s great joy, a fifth series was commissioned, one episode of which I went to.

That Mitchell and Webb Sound - Robert WebbSo what funny sketches did ‘da crew have for us? Well for starters we found out what joys life holds when you’ve cured cancer (ie. not having to receive telephone calls about third world poverty). We also heard how damaging the White Witch’s scheme of ‘winter but never Christmas’ is to Narnia’s retail industry. My favourite sketch by far was writen by John Finnemore showing a husband and wife telling a story however they can never really agree on the facts.

So at the end of the show I went outside and met three of the cast; Mitchell, Webb and Coleman. They were very nice, here’s some photos:
